Quote from the little man while holding on tight to his mum. Little Champ! Too good not to write down!

drill

I read somewhere a while back, I’m not sure where but a pretty good guess would be Built by Kids, they’re well into this sort of thing, about taking apart old tech with your kids. When I read it, the boys were probably a little young, so I promptly forgot about it.

Today, as I was about to throw out an old busted drill, like literally had the bin lid open, I remembered that post, stopped, brought the drill back inside, got the boys together, pulled out the screw driver and took it apart. It was awesome, once it was apart we talked through the different parts, the rechargeable battery pack, the trigger that makes it go and the motor that then runs the drill.

Just when I thought we were all done and ready to put all the part into the bin, I remembered that it was a motor. A motor! I used to love motors as a kid. I remember sticking little 9 volt batteries on to small motors from old cars and watching them whizz. This was a BIG Motor!!!

The boys went bananas for it.
Almost as much as dad:)

I went and grabbed a 9 volt battery from one of the fire alarms. (don’t worry, I put it back and tested it when we were finished) and we took turns touching it to the wires on the motor to make it go. The boys went bananas for it. Almost as much as dad:)

The best thing though, it’s opened a door inside my head and now I’m thinking about all the things we could do with the motor, battery and trigger combo. It could be a car that goes or a windmill or a water wheel.

So we kept it and the switch and once we’re done with this whole moving malarkey, we are so going to make something awesome that we can turn on and off with an open / closed circuit switch (I think that’s right).

I’m so inspired by the enjoyment we had taking something apart and looking at how it all worked but as I said before, it’s opened a doorway in my head to a whole new world of things we can make together, that I hadn’t even thought of making with them.

To say I’m excited is a total understatement, I am wrapped!

Do you do this sort of thing with your little ones? Would love to hear about it!
Have fun

This was a pic I took with phoster (which is a really cool app btw) on instagram at easter. There should have really been a question mark at the end of that statement as it was total day-dreaming and wishful thinking. Now today, it’s less than 4 weeks away from becoming an actual reality. I still can’t believe this is actually happening. Life Changing! Yeah, I’m totally freaking out! Crazy…

Inspiration Everywhere: London Bombings 2005

london-bombings

This was a note I wrote to myself on July 7, 2005 after having just moved to London. Within our first three months there, we had been witness to a terrorist attack and it still kinda blows my mind.

I was on my way to work as the tube was in the process of being shut down. As memory serves, the guards were closing the gates without really telling anyone what was going on, much to the disgruntlement and confusion of many circle line passengers. People were actually trying to scramble through the gates and into the station so as not to be late to work. When the gates finally closed, we all went to find busses. Then the busses stopped running. Then I decided to work from home. It wasn’t until after I’d spoken to my folks in Australia that I heard there had been a bombing.

We didn’t see the blasts or anything like that, we were simply among the thousands that were having a rubbish time getting to work that day.

The image above is another one from my folder of images “Temp images – do not delete“, where the bulk of the other Inspiration Everywhere posts are from. This one is more personal inspiration but I wanted to share it anyway. These are some of the notes that I took on the day. I wish there was something more poignant or special about the notes I took that day, but they are to me, a reminder that I was there and that it happened.

This post was a bit of a sideways step from what I usually write about here but I thought it was worth posting. It isn’t intended to be a “carpe diem / kiss your kids” kinda post, but do that anyway:) It’s just interesting to me that massive things can happen and people just keep on going. These events havent really changed the way I see the world, but on looking back and thinking about it, I guess I can remember those who were lost, that violence solves nothing and that in spite of everything, the world is an awesome place!!!

Sorry if that came off preachy, it wasn’t meant to.

Have a great day!

Inspiration everywhere: I cook bark

Another image from the random “temp images do not delete” folder. I don’t really get into poetry but I would have to say this is probably one of my favourite poems. I don’t know who it’s by, in fact up until a moment ago, I couldn’t have told you where I got it from.

I love the dark sense of humour in it’s 25 words. It’s a little bit defeatist but it makes me smile. I can just see the duck taking the arrow and walking off with it whilst the archer stands dejected. The boys don’t get it but one day they will:)

Anyway, I found this at a site I haven’t been to in ages but is efinitely worth your having a look at. It’s not really kids related but it’s dripping with inspiration. It’s called stopping off place and you should definitely check it out.

Inspiration everywhere, even in poetry, who’d a thunk it?!

Inspiration Everywhere: This makes me happy

happiness

Another of the photos found in the “temp photos don’t delete” folder, this was a massive paste-up poster that was on my way to work maybe two years ago. I never found out who made it or if it was for anything other than just being awesome but it makes me smile and I think there is definitely something in it for all of us 🙂

Right. I’m off to be unrealistic. Have fun!

This is not a post where I say, sorry I haven’t posted enough or I’ve been busy or this or that, because check it, I’m getting pretty consistent. This is a post where I say that I love writing here and have decided to step it up and commit to posting here at least three times a week.

Inpiration everhere. Reading other people’s mail.

technical

Well. Not really, It’s addressed to me, sort of.

I’m fortunate enough to have my full name as my email address. It’s a double-edged sword though. The problem is, that other people think that they have the same email, twitter, instagram etc. as me.

Wow, a new post category. Because , yeah that’s amazing right 😀

Well, let me explain. I figure, this site is almost entirely about the creative stuff we do with the kids and that’s totally what it’s meant to be. But creativity is everywhere and there is just so much stuff that inspires me that I want to take the time to share some of the good stuff here once in a while, rather than just post it to Pinstergram and the like.
